Frequently asked questions
Here are the questions we get asked most. For the full details, see our Terms & Conditions and Privacy Policy.
Getting started
How does In-Stock? work?
Post the item you’re after and a real person in a real store checks the shelf for you. They snap a photo to confirm it’s there, along with the size, colour and price. Once you’ve confirmed the check was done properly, your Stock Checker gets paid. Need it kept aside? You can also ask them to put the item on hold at the counter or with store staff.
Can I be both a shopper and a Stock Checker?
Yes. You choose your role when you sign up, and you can switch to the other role later. The two sides are kept separate, though - money you earn as a Stock Checker can’t be spent as a shopper, and you’ll need a valid credit or debit card on file to post a request as a shopper.
What kinds of requests can I post?
Three options:
- A check - confirm an item’s availability and price at a store you choose.
- A check + hold - we check the item and try to place it on hold at the counter or with staff.
- An upgrade - start with a check, then upgrade it to a hold. The Stock Checker who did your check gets first dibs; if they can’t do the hold, it goes back to the pool as a standalone hold request.
Is this just an AI app?
No. In-Stock? was built by an award-winning development team over several years, and it’s reviewed and updated regularly. Every check is done by a real person in a real store.
Costs, payments & earnings
What does it cost to use In-Stock? (shoppers)
A check is just $2.50. A combined check + hold is $4.80. If you’re a GST-registered ABN business, you’ll receive a receipt with GST details.
How much can I earn as a Stock Checker?
You earn $2.00 per check, or $4.00 for a combined check + hold. Payment is released once the shopper confirms your task - if it’s never confirmed, you may not be paid, so always keep your evidence photo handy.
When and how do I get paid?
Earnings are paid automatically to your bank account each month, as long as your balance is over $6.00 (about three checks). Anything under that rolls over to the next month. A $3.00 payout fee applies to each monthly payout, so it pays to build up a few checks before payout day (the 1st of each month) rather than cashing out a single job.
Is it safe? How are payments handled?
All payments run through Stripe - the same secure technology behind millions of apps worldwide. As a shopper, your card details are encrypted and never visible to anyone. As a Stock Checker, your details are encrypted too, and your earnings land straight in your bank account each month. No cash ever changes hands.
I’d rather not use my credit card. Any other options?
Yes - you can use a prepaid card from supermarkets or Australia Post. Just enter the cardholder name as “Gift Cardholder”.
Timers, reviews & cancellations
What are the 30-minute timers for?
They keep things moving for both sides:
- As a Stock Checker, you’ll see a 30-minute timer when you accept a request (you can extend it once). If the job isn’t done in time, it returns to the pool for someone else.
- As a shopper, a 30-minute timer starts when a Stock Checker responds. Use it to review their reply and ask anything in chat before payment is released. If you do nothing, the timer runs out and payment is automatically sent to the Checker.
What happens if no one picks up my request?
If a request is still unclaimed after a month, the app will ask whether you’d like to repost it or cancel. Cancelling refunds the amount back to your original payment method.
Why should I leave a review?
Reviews help everyone shop and check with confidence. Stock Checkers generally get first pick of jobs, and shoppers can see a Checker’s review score when they take on a job - so a strong track record helps a Checker win more work and makes it easy for shoppers to decide who to trust with a check or a hold.
For Stock Checkers: doing a great job
How do I find open requests near me?
Two ways: open the map and enter a postcode (then head back and refresh the page to load requests), or set your address in your Profile. Either way, use the km range setting to focus on the area you want to cover.
How do I complete a request properly?
Always take a photo at the shelf as proof you’ve checked in person - add it to the summary page or the comments. It confirms the job for the shopper and helps avoid any disputes.
